MindsEye’s first official Mascoutah Invitational BeepBall Tournament was a huge success! This year there were six teams: Mascoutah Eye Care, Edward Jones (Matthew Schroeder), Adams Publications, Hannigan Team Realty, and two Misfitz teams.

To help fill out these teams, and to make the games competitive, MindsEye’s nationally competing BeepBall team, The Gateway Archers, were split among the field. Kyle Borah, Sean Borah, and Archers Coach/Pitcher Mike Curtis represented Mascoutah Eye Care. Chad Dillon, Liam McCoy, Kasondra McDaniel, and Atlanta Chaos BeepBall Pitcher Cortez Hill played for Edward Jones. Mari Blumenthal pitched for Adams Publications. Richie Krussel and Leul McChesney were on Hannigan Team Realty. The Misfiz were put together by Archer pitcher Ashley Rench and also had Casey Scott.

Championship Game

Mascoutah Eye Care vs Edward Jones: 7-6

These two teams gave the most compelling and competitive game of the day. Between Archers batters and experienced pitchers, neither roster was short of talent. Mike Curtis and Cortez Hill gave their teams excellent opportunities to score in each at-bat.

Kyle Borah started the game off with a huge hit to give Mascoutah Eye Care a 1-0 lead. Edward Jones came right back in the bottom of the first with runs by Liam, Chad, and Ben to give them a 3-1 lead heading into the top of the 2nd. Mascoutah couldn’t put up any runs in their next at-bat, but Edward Jones got another run in their turn with Nick scoring his first-ever BeepBall Run, giving Edward Jones a 4-1 lead heading into the top of the 3rd. Kyle Borah and Sean Borah scored back-to-back runs for Mascoutah Eye Care to close the gap to 4-3 and Mascoutah Eye Care was able to shut down Edward Jones during their at-bat. Heading into the inning with Edward Jones up 1, Mascoutah Eye Care came out hitting with runs by Kendra, Kyle, and Nick to give them a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the 4th, and because of time constraints, it would be the last at-bat for Edward Jones. Archer Chad Dillon came into pitch to Cortez and they connected to score a run to make it 6-5. Chad would also go on to score the tying run to make it 6-6, but Edward Jones couldn’t get any more runs to win the game.

Since time had elapsed, the game would go to a shoot-out. The rules of the shoot-out are: each team gets 3 batters and each batter gets 3 pitches. If they put one of those pitches into play, then it is a point. No running the base, and no fielding. A true test of the pitcher and hitter being on the same page to put the ball into play.

First up was Mascoutah Eye Care with Kyle, Sean, and Nick. Kyle and pitcher Mike couldn’t hook up and no point was scored. However, Sean and Nick both put balls into play to give them 2 points in the shoot-out. Edward Jones had their turn with Chad, Kendra, and Ben. Chad and Kendra got back-to-back points but Ben couldn’t connect. After the first shoot-out round, it was 2-2.

Now the game turned to a sudden death shoot-out where each team alternates batters until there is a winner. Kyle came up for Mascoutah Eye Care and crushed a hit to score a point. Chad was up next for Edward Jones. After a few close pitches, they couldn’t connect to put the ball in play.

Mascoutah Eye Care is the 2021 Mascoutah Invitational BeepBall Tournament Champion team! Kyle Borah and Sean Borah are Co-MVP! Congratulations!
